You’d be surprised how labor-intensive this page was. I’m always amused annoyed to find out how much the amount of detail does not necessarily dictate the level of challenge in a page of comics.
The first paycheck (and the first publication offer) I ever got in comics came from Joey Manley, human whirlwind and erstwhile webcomics impresario. Many people who are now longtime friends and colleagues of mine could probably say the same. He offered me a spot at Girlamatic.com, where my first book, Bite Me, was serialized.
News this evening is that he’s died, very suddenly, of pneumonia.
Shaenon Garrity wrote a lovely post earlier this year about the webcomics community that Joey built and what it meant to some of us baby-faced goobers. I’m glad he got to read it. You should, too.
Joey is dead? Omigod. Girlamatic was one of the very few sites I paid money to subscribe to (mainly for Bite Me) and I had a number of good email exchanges with him. What a loss. But what a legacy as well. RIP Joey
Any relation to Jenn Manley Lee?
No, no relation (although she was one of Joey’s artists, too).
